Merlin Entertainments Sustainability Talk
One of our team members attended a Merlin sustainability talk at Greenloop with Dare Ilori (Merlin’s Group Sustainability Director).
Here’s what we gathered from the talk, with some plans for the majority of Merlin Parks:
-
CocaCola Freestyle Cups: Merlin are working with Coca-Cola to reduce single use plastics by installing more Freestyle machines at attractions so guests use reusable cups and discourage individual bottled drinks. This could suggest that we will see an increased number of Freestyle Machines dotted around Thorpe Park in the coming months and years!
-
Merlin plan to have a notch of their carbon management plan public: Plan to have touch points within their parks to show guests some of their activities going on. An example given by Dare was by putting signage at Thorpe Park saying “If this is not recycled, then it will be incinerated to generate energy”.
-
1.7mw Solar car port planned for Thorpe Park (also for other Merlin Resorts such as LEGOLAND California & Gardaland):Â Merlin are also working with RAW Charging on electric vehicle charging point installation. Phase 1 has recently been completed following the installation of a large number of electric vehicle charging points at both LEGOLAND Windsor Resort and Chessington World of Adventures Resort with Phase 2 to expand to Thorpe Park with more plans for electric vehicle charging across further UK attractions including Alton Towers and Warwick Castle. “They should be fully completed very soon” – tying off legal stuff.
